- TOMBSTONE BACKPACKERS - Picton (great hosts, clean and very comfortable;pickup & drop-off service; 2 cats)
- TRIPINN - Westport (great hosts, warm & historical house, have cats)
- THE BUG - Nelson (amazingly clean and homey, young and energetic hosts, pick-up/drop-of service, free internet)
- BIRDSONG - Hokitika (great host and very comfortable rooms;pick-up/drop-off service)
- MIMIHA COTTAGE- Bay of Plenty (luxurious self-contained cottage; pick-up/drop-off service)
- CITY LODGE - Auckland (clean singles with ensuite, more hotel than backpackers)
- CAT'S PYJAMAS BACKPACKERS - Whitianga (awesome host & great ambiance, had a house bbq, have a cat)
- Albatross Backpacker Inn - Kaikoura (not bad, nothing special)

definitely creative -- the last one would be my favourite... makes me want to leave a letter in there...
I had found a buoy used as a letterbox up in Kaitaia but unfortunately didn't take a picture! I regret that now. It would have been a great addition!
My "letterbox" as you call it here was run over by someone just yesterday! I may need to get creative with my replacment of it... in light of what I've seen here...LOL..
We'll brain storm when you get here.

For all I know, there's a law in North America for what you can use as a letterbox, but it'd be interesting to see how long it would take them to come and tell you to take it down! Let's do it! Preparing my brainstorming juices...
