- TOMBSTONE BACKPACKERS - Picton (great hosts, clean and very comfortable;pickup & drop-off service; 2 cats)
- TRIPINN - Westport (great hosts, warm & historical house, have cats)
- THE BUG - Nelson (amazingly clean and homey, young and energetic hosts, pick-up/drop-of service, free internet)
- BIRDSONG - Hokitika (great host and very comfortable rooms;pick-up/drop-off service)
- MIMIHA COTTAGE- Bay of Plenty (luxurious self-contained cottage; pick-up/drop-off service)
- CITY LODGE - Auckland (clean singles with ensuite, more hotel than backpackers)
- CAT'S PYJAMAS BACKPACKERS - Whitianga (awesome host & great ambiance, had a house bbq, have a cat)
- Albatross Backpacker Inn - Kaikoura (not bad, nothing special)
- Bluff Lodge - Bluff (very cold, a bit like a factory but nice owners)
- The Brown Kiwi - Auckland (nice courtyard garden)
- Scallywags - Queenstown (amazing view!, eccentric host; pick-up service)
- Hat Trick Lodge Backpackers - Motueka (nice owners, cold rooms)
- Southern Comfort - Invercargill (nice old home with pretty garden)
- Ivory Towers - Fox Glacier (nice host, nothing special)
- Hogwartz - Dunedin (nice old house, a bit too big for me, have dogs)
- Central Backpackers - Dunedin (nice hosts, clean, cat in house)
- Lloyd's Lodge - Whakatane (nice young hosts, cold rooms)
- World Wide Backpackers - Wellington (grotty, party place, close to town)
- Harbourside City Backpackers - Tauranga (great view, in need of repairs in bathrooms)
- Rainbow Lodge- Taupo (creaky floorboards and doors, pick-up/drop-off service, great doubles with ensuite)
- Rotorua Central Backpackers - Rotorua (nice, helpful hosts)
- Mayfair Lodge Backpackers - Paihia (clean, far from town but close to Waitangi)
